Press Release
November 2, 2001
October 2001, the
Yemeni security arrested and harassed, for no reason, the Sudanese well-reputed
human rights activists, Dr. Abdel-Salam Nuraddin and Mr. Ahmad Saif.
SHRO-Cairo highly
appreciates the Yemeni writers and the other concerned intellectuals for
their righteous position versus the security body of the Republic of Yemen
that violated: (1) the hospitality of Yemen to the Sudanese scholars;
(2) the good reception that the Prime Minister Abdel-Qader Aba-Jmal and
the Presidential Advisor Mr. Abdel-Karim Al-Iryani offered to the Sudanese
scholars; (3) the international law that guarantees the Sudanese visitors
full rights to complete their mission in Yemen, as approved by the Yemeni
authority; and (4) the friendship of the Sudanese and Yemeni peoples that
is deeply rooted in the history of the two nations.
SHRO-Cairo expresses
full gratitude to the Yemeni writers and professional groups that honorably
defended the right of Ahmad Saif and Abdel-Salam Nuraddin to complete
their authorized work in Yemen.
Our Organization
is gravely concerned for the hostile behavior of the Yemeni security that
aggressively assaulted these respectable scholars in an unprecedented
action. The Yemeni security terrorized the Sudanese scholars with arbitrary
arrest, disrespect, and harassment besides wrongfully accusing them of
terrorism, regardless of the fact that the Yemeni authorities are aware
these Sudanese researchers are well-reputed human rights activists.
SHRO-Cairo asks the
Government of Yemen to investigate the unwarranted acts and aggressive
attacks of the Yemeni security against these Sudanese scholars and human
rights activists. The Organization requires further the Yemeni security
to redress the wrongful acts committed against our respectful Sudanese
scholars, as is appropriate.
