SHRO-CAIRO URGENT APPEAL TO RELEASE SUDANESE NATIONALS FROM JAIL IN LEBANON

Date:  Fri, 16 Mar 2001 17:09:31 -0600

SHRO-Cairo received reliable information that the Sudanese nationals, Achian Deng Madot, Chairman of the SPLM Lebanon Chapter, Salah Mohamed Abdellah, Henry Akon Deng, Amar Hagar Angilma, and Mobior Rakog Deng. These are active
members of the Sudanese opposition the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) as well as the Sudan Peoples' Liberation Movement (SPLM), have been subjected to arrest and tortures at the Romia Prison and other detention centers inappalling conditions.

SHRO-Cairo is deeply concerned for the health conditions of these Sudanese nationals whose residence in Lebanon, in principle, has been legally covered by student permits. Our Organization condemns in the strongest terms possible the unlawful refusal of the Sudanese Embassy in Lebanon to renew the Sudanese passports of these nationals, in gross violation of the Sudanese law and international norms.

SHRO-Cairo appeals to the Lebanese Government to kindly appreciate on humanitarian grounds the hardships these students are made to face by their own Embassy. That is illegally inhibiting the full enjoyment of their legal status and is planning to deport them to Sudan as members of the NDA (Sudan) opposition group.

The Organization is deeply concerned for the safety of these nationals for fear of their lives if they would be deported to Sudan under the unlawful and anti-human rights efforts of the Sudanese Embassy in Beirut. SHRO-Cairo calls upon the Lebanese Authority to release these Sudanese citizens from jail, ensure legal consultation to their residence affairs, and allow them to continue college studies in the sisterly State of Lebanon.

Sincerely,

Mahgoub El-Tigani
SHRO-Cairo President
